Swiss Vignette for Motorhomes and Campervans

Short answer: a motorhome or campervan under 3.5 tonnes needs the standard CHF 40 vignette, just like a car. If you tow a caravan or trailer, it needs its own separate vignette, so you would buy two.

Under 3.5 tonnes: the standard vignette

If your motorhome or campervan has a maximum weight under 3.5 tonnes, it is treated exactly like a car. You need one standard vignette (CHF 40), which Swiss Vignette registers as an e-vignette linked to your plate.

Most compact and mid-size campervans (for example VW California-style vans and many panel-van conversions) fall under this limit. Check your vehicle’s gross weight on the V5C or plate.

Over 3.5 tonnes: a different system

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes are not covered by the standard vignette. They fall under Switzerland’s heavy-vehicle charge (the HVF / PSVA), which is calculated differently and arranged at the border rather than through a vignette. If your fully-loaded motorhome exceeds 3.5t, the standard vignette does not apply to it.

Towing a caravan or trailer

This is the point that catches people out: a trailer or caravan needs its own vignette. It does not matter that your car or motorhome already has one, the towed unit is charged separately at the same CHF 40.

Which should a motorhome get?
