Swiss E-Vignette vs Physical Sticker: Which to Choose
Updated 14 July 2026
Short answer: for most UK drivers the e-vignette is the better choice because it is valid the instant it is registered, with nothing to wait for in the post. It costs exactly the same as the sticker.
Since August 2023, Switzerland has offered a digital e-vignette linked to your number plate as an alternative to the traditional windscreen sticker. Both are equally valid and both cost the official CHF 40.
Quick comparison
| E-Vignette | Physical Sticker | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | CHF 40 (same) | CHF 40 (same) |
| Valid from | Immediately after registration | Once affixed to your windscreen |
| Delivery | Nothing to wait for | Posted, allow 5-10 working days |
| Display | Nothing to display | Stick inside the windscreen |
| Linked to | Your number plate | The specific windscreen |
| Best for | Most UK drivers | Drivers who prefer a physical item |
Why we recommend the e-vignette
- It is instant. As soon as your plate is registered, you are covered. There is no postal wait, which matters if your trip is soon.
- Nothing to lose or damage. There is no sticker to peel, misplace or reapply.
- It follows a windscreen replacement. Because it is tied to your plate, not the glass, a cracked or replaced windscreen is not a problem.
- Automatic checks. Swiss cameras and police read your plate against the federal database, so there is nothing to show.
When the physical sticker makes sense
The sticker is still a good option if you like having something physical in the car, or if you are ordering well ahead of your trip and delivery time is not an issue. Just remember it must be properly affixed to the inside of the windscreen to be valid.
Note that Swiss Vignette registers the e-vignette only. The physical sticker is not sold through us - it is available at Swiss border crossings, petrol stations and post offices.
One thing to watch
A physical sticker is tied to the windscreen it is stuck to. If you replace your windscreen, the sticker is void and you would need a new one. The e-vignette avoids this entirely because it is linked to your registration.
